9/26 Weekly Email

Hi all,

Happy Thursday! Apologies for the late email but this has been a busy day/week.I have a few minor updates now and hope I can share some more substantive updates in next week’s email.

First, UB Time. Unfortunately UAEA is still somewhat stuck in stasis regarding what’s going on with our UB time. UAEA’s law-firm has reviewed the Supreme Court case and relevant case law, consulted with other union groups across the country, and will soon be finalizing some advisory language outlining a recommended approach. Please note that our firm represents multiple employee associations across Arizona so any proposed solution will likely be whatever is adopted by our peer cities in coming months. We will provide as in-depth of an explanation as we can as soon as we know more - for now, rest assured that we are still using our UB time to perform crucial UAEA functions.

Second, Adopt-a-Path. Our last Adopt-A-Path event of the year will be on Saturday, October 5th, from 7AM-9AM. We will be cleaning up our usual corridor between Curry Rd and McKellips in North Tempe - don’t forget this is eligible for community service points on the Healthy Me in Tempe app. The attached photo shows the parking lot we normally start in - the closest address is 1325 E Curry Rd,Tempe AZ, 85288. If you plan on attending, please show up shortly before 7AM and bring sun protection and water. UAEA will provide breakfast, additional drinks, trash pickers, gloves, and garbage bags. Email membership@uaeatempe.com by Wednesday, October 2nd if you plan to attend so we can purchase a sufficient quantity of cleanup supplies and breakfast items.

Third, Executive Board recruitment. Our Executive Team currently has a vacancy for a Citywide Representative and per Article 8, Section 11 of our bylaws, we would like to appoint someone to the role. Please note that the term of this role will end in June of 2025 so if you’d like to dip your toes into Executive Service without committing several years of time, this may be a good opportunity. Anyone who serves will of course be eligible to run in the Spring 2025 elections if they desire to continue. Article 7 of our bylaws outlines the specific duties of Citywide Representatives but it generally entails assisting members with discipline cases, representing your department in Labor Management Committees, and attending the monthly Board and Member meetings. If interested, send an email (no more than 500 words, no minimum length) with a brief description of why you’re interested, any relevant union experience, and any skills or knowledge you have that may be helpful to UAEA. Please send this to president@uaeatempe.com by 5PM on Thursday, 10/10. The Executive Team will review all apps shortly thereafter. If you are unable to submit materials via email, please feel free to reach out at 480-719-9608 to coordinate a submission with me.

Thanks for reading this email and sticking with us. I’m sorry about this sudden burst of 110 degree days but we should be out of the heat soon - fingers crossed that October starts on a good note.

All best,
